Frank Renton

Our Host

Frank Renton has had the most amazing musical career. He was a teenage cornet star and joined the Black Dyke Band at the age of thirteen, then the trumpet section of the National Youth Orchestra before studying at the Royal Manchester College of Music (before it became the Royal Northern).

He joined the Army as a cornet and trumpet player in the Band of the Royal Horse Guards  and in a thirty three year career swiftly rose through the ranks as a conductor before his final appointment as Principal Director of Music for the Army and Director of the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

In 1992 he left the Army and joined the ranks of the BBC as a writer and presenter and for twenty three years was the host of Listen to the Band on BBC Radio 2. Now with frankrentononbrass.com he creates and presents podcasts.

Throughout his military and broadcasting career he conducted many bands but most famously the Grimethorpe Colliery Band from 1988-1993 one of the most successful periods in their history.

Frank is still the Principal Conductor of the British Concert Orchestra, involved in music making all over the world, and the best known voice in the brass world.
